Turkish Coffee vs. Regular Coffee: Which Tastes Better?

Turkish Coffee vs. Regular Coffee: Which Tastes Better?

There are many different types of coffee, and people may have various preferences on how they want their preference brewed and served. Some love it strong and deep black, while others want it sweetened with certain additions. Regardless of their favorites, coffee enthusiasts always love to try new variations from all over the world.

If you want to try something new, you may wish to add Turkish coffee to your list. You may be wondering about the difference between Turkish coffee and regular coffee. How are they different when it comes to taste? How strong is Turkish coffee? What are the brewing methods used for Turkish coffee? These questions and more will be answered in this article.

One of the distinguishable differences between Turkish coffee and regular coffee is that Turkish brews have more caffeine per fluid ounce. Turkish coffee involves firm beans and a particular brewing process, making it a unique option for coffee drinkers.

Keep reading to learn more about Turkish coffee and see if it is perfect for you.

    Turkish Coffee vs. Espresso

Espresso shots are core ingredients found in Americanos, cappuccinos, and lattes, so it is fitting to use this for a comparative guide on factors such as the amount of caffeine, brewing method, grind size, and taste.

    Amount of Caffeine

A cup of Turkish coffee is about two and a half ounces, consisting of 60 mg caffeine, while an ounce of espresso has 40 to 50 mg.

Extracting caffeine from espresso typically requires less water and more pressure. Meanwhile, Turkish coffee beans are boiled at least twice to extract more caffeine per bean. In line with this, there’s actually more caffeine per ounce in espresso. But when you compare their brewing processes, they do not differ that much at an average of 50-70 mg per one and a half ounces.

    Extraction

Their brewing methods are one of the main differences between Turkish coffee and espresso.

To extract Turkish coffee, you’ll have to finely ground the beans mixed with water before being sweetened with sugar in the initial brewing process. Moreover, you’ll also need a tablespoon of ground coffee for every three ounces of water.

The next step is to use heat to brew the coffee slowly, using a special pot known as “cezve.” Before it arrives at the boiling point, it will make a foamy froth, which should be perfect for taking off the stove. You may boil this several times as the frothier the foam is, the better.

In contrast, espresso extraction is a more straightforward process as it can be done using a machine. What you’ll need to do is to warm up the espresso grinds utilizing the machine. It then applies 9 atm of pressure so that it can drip for 30 seconds. That’s all it takes to finish extracting your regular coffee.

So for brewing times, an espresso shot will only need 30 seconds, while a cup of Turkish coffee can take 3 to 5 minutes. If you think that is too long to wait, you can dig into a delicious Turkish snack before enjoying them with your fresh coffee!

    Grind Size

Turkish coffee has a finer grind, with a dust-like texture with an excellent aroma and consistency. Regular coffee such as espresso is coarser, similar to the texture of sugar.

    Taste

Espresso is a regular, go-to coffee that most coffee drinkers enjoy. However, Turkish coffee is a fantastic choice if you want to explore and discover a whole coffee drinking experience. As the beans are not filtered, and the texture is distinct, it offers a unique taste that you may not have tried before!
